How Many Chemical Portable Toilets Do I Need?

One of the most common questions when organising an event is “How many portable toilets do I need?”

The answer depends on more than simply the number of guests. The type of event, how long it lasts, whether food and alcohol are being served, the expected male-to-female ratio and whether people are staying overnight can all affect the number of toilets required.

As a general starting point for a smaller or private event, we recommend allowing approximately one chemical portable toilet for every 60–75 guests.

For example:

Expected guests Suggested starting point
Up to 60 1 chemical toilet
61–120 2 chemical toilets
121–180 3 chemical toilets
181–240 4 chemical toilets
241–300 5 chemical toilets
301–375 5–6 chemical toilets
376–450 6–8 chemical toilets

These figures are intended as a planning guide rather than a fixed requirement. For larger public events, festivals or events lasting several hours, toilet provision should be assessed using recognised event guidance and the specific circumstances of the event.

The current Purple Guide recommends considering the event duration, audience profile, food and drink consumption, peak periods of toilet use and other factors when determining the appropriate provision.

If you are unsure how many chemical toilets you need, tell us your expected guest numbers, event duration and type of event and we can advise you on a suitable provision.

Chemical Toilet Hire for Different Types of Events

The number of portable toilets required can vary considerably depending on the type of event.

Weddings and private parties

For a private party or wedding, a useful starting point is around one chemical toilet per 60–75 guests, particularly where the event is relatively short and there are no other significant toilet facilities available.

If alcohol is being served, guests are likely to use the facilities more frequently, so it is sensible to avoid working to the absolute minimum.

For weddings and larger private events, Mobile Thrones can also provide luxury mobile toilet units if you would prefer a more spacious and premium toilet facility.

Festivals and public events

Larger public events require more detailed planning. The current Purple Guide guidance uses different ratios depending on event duration and whether food and alcohol are served. For a typical local event, it gives a starting point of one female toilet per 100 attendees and one male toilet per 500 attendees, plus one urinal per 150 males. Events with longer opening times and significant food or alcohol consumption require greater provision.

For this reason, we recommend speaking to us before booking chemical toilets for a large public event.

Sporting events

Sporting events can create periods of particularly high toilet demand, especially immediately before an event starts, during intervals and at the end of the event.

Rather than considering only the total number of attendees, it is important to consider when people are most likely to use the toilets. Providing additional facilities can help reduce queues during these peak periods.

Construction, agricultural and other long-term use

Chemical portable toilets can also be used where permanent toilet facilities are unavailable.

For workplace and construction environments, however, different welfare requirements apply. The HSE states that flushing toilets with running water should generally be provided where possible, with chemical toilets being an alternative where appropriate circumstances prevent this.

For longer-term requirements, Mobile Thrones can discuss a servicing schedule based on the number of users and expected frequency of use.

How Often Do Chemical Portable Toilets Need Emptying?

There isn’t a single fixed emptying interval that applies to every portable toilet.

A chemical toilet’s servicing requirement depends primarily on how heavily it is being used. A toilet used by 20 people over a day will obviously require less servicing than one used continuously by 100 people.

The Purple Guide specifically recognises that portable toilets have a finite number of uses before they require servicing or emptying and recommends considering peak usage when planning sanitation arrangements.

As a practical planning guide:

Approximate users per chemical toilet Typical servicing consideration
Up to 30 users Usually suitable for a single-day event without an intermediate empty, subject to usage
30–60 users Monitor usage; an intermediate service may be appropriate for longer events
60–75 users Consider servicing/emptying for events running for a full day
75–100+ users Additional servicing or additional toilets should be considered
100+ users We would normally recommend discussing a specific servicing plan

These are planning guidelines rather than guaranteed capacities. Actual servicing requirements depend on the duration and intensity of use, the type of event, toilet usage patterns and the specific equipment being hired.

For multi-day events, prolonged hire or particularly busy events, we can arrange cleaning, servicing and waste removal as required.

How Often Should Portable Toilets Be Cleaned?

Cleaning and emptying are two separate considerations.

A toilet may still have sufficient tank capacity but require cleaning and replenishment because of heavy use. Conversely, a lightly used unit may not require the same level of intervention.

For a busy event, toilets should be checked regularly throughout the event, particularly during peak periods. Event guidance recommends that sanitary facilities are serviced regularly to keep them clean, hygienic and fully operational.

For longer hires, Mobile Thrones can arrange servicing according to usage. Our servicing can include cleaning the unit, emptying waste where required and replenishing consumables.

What is included with Mobile Thrones portable toilet hire?

Our chemical portable toilet units are supplied ready for use with:

  • Toilet rolls
  • Hand sanitiser

For longer or multi-day hires, additional servicing and waste removal can be arranged to keep the facilities clean, fresh and operational throughout the hire period.

If your event requires continuous cleaning and replenishment while guests are present, we can also discuss the availability of an attendant service.

Should I Hire More Toilets or Arrange More Frequent Servicing?

If you are expecting heavy usage, there are two ways of increasing capacity:

Add more toilets – increasing the number of available units reduces the number of people using each toilet and therefore reduces queues and the pressure on individual units.

Arrange additional servicing – particularly useful for multi-day events or situations where the same toilets will be used continuously throughout the day.

For a short event, adding additional units will usually be the simpler solution. For a multi-day event, regular servicing and waste removal become increasingly important.

In practice, the best solution may be a combination of both.

What Information Do I Need to Provide When Hiring Chemical Toilets?

When you contact Mobile Thrones for a quote, it helps to provide:

  • The date of your event
  • The location
  • Expected number of guests
  • Approximate event duration
  • Whether food and alcohol will be served
  • Expected male/female split, if known
  • Whether the event is indoors or outdoors
  • Whether toilets are required for staff as well as guests
  • Whether accessible facilities are required
  • Whether the toilets will be required for more than one day
  • Any restrictions on access to the site

This information allows us to recommend the most appropriate number and type of portable toilets and determine whether additional servicing is likely to be required.

Chemical Portable Toilet Hire – A Simple Planning Guide

If you are organising a small private event and simply need a quick starting point, allow approximately one chemical portable toilet for every 60–75 guests.

For larger events, particularly where alcohol is being served, the event lasts more than six hours or there are significant peaks in toilet use, we recommend allowing additional facilities and discussing your requirements with us.

For multi-day events, don’t just consider the number of toilets. You should also plan for regular cleaning, emptying, waste removal and replenishment of toilet and hand-hygiene supplies.

Mobile Thrones can help you work out both the number of toilets and the servicing requirements before your event.
